A few weeks ago, Konstantine Buhler, Partner at Sequoia, published a research graph titled “What the internet hyped, versus what got built”, to measure hype over the past two decades: https://x.com/Konstantine/status/2085053452640817334.
Take a look at the chart if you can, but let me walk you through what it shows, because it captures something we talk about a lot on this show: the difference between hype and infrastructure.
The chart tracks what topics dominated the internet's attention each year since 2007, ranked by hype, alongside the most valuable company founded that same year. And if you trace the yellow line, the one labeled Crypto and Web3, you see a very specific arc. It barely registers in the early years. It climbs sharply around 2017, spikes again around 2021, and then falls off a cliff after 2022, dropping out of the top rankings entirely by the more recent years on the chart.
At first glance, that looks like a story of decline.
